On Tuesday, October 23, 2012, the Woodley School Choir, The Woodley Voices, along with the Woodley Orchestra, departed the school around 8:30 am and were fortunate enough to travel to Jackson, MS to attend the Annual Mississippi Sings Concert at Thalia Mara Hall. This event is sponsored by The MS Music Educators Association. Students were able to witness the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in concert. The theme for this year was "Blues and Bluegrass" style of music. As the Orchestra played, students were able to sing along. One of highlighted songs was entitled, "Delta Blues". It was written by Mississippi's own, Gail Jabour. Students participated in several sing-alongs with other elementary students from Meridian, Vicksburg, and Collins, MS. Lesson plans were sent prior to the school for the show and students were familiar with the songs and movements on the program. The students were amazed and expressed their enjoyment of the event, especially the solo played on the hammered dulcimer, one of the oldest instruments. Students were able to appreciate the art form of blues/jazz/bluegrass through this educational and cultural experience.
